The antiquarian Thomasina Bateman is writing a book on the barrows of England that documents the treasures that she discovers inside. A fascinating letter prompts her to go to the small village of Bewlay in England’s remote countryside. She departs on a train along with her assistant on the following day.
On her arrival the man mysteriously had summoned her to her home is not to be found. Her assistant never arrives. Landowners who are obstinately opposed to access to his barrow and locals are suspicious of the lady who is traveling alone in her own vehicle and (gasp!) wears trousers.
